I'm always excited to see what my friends create & I will try to share some with you all when I can.

My junkin' creating friend Carla, designed and mosaicked this piece as a prize for her nephew & fiancee's shag (that's a wedding social? for those of you that might not live in Thunder Bay).

Its hard to see but the frame is barnwood to give it a rustic feel.

Here it is before the grout was applied.

Real stones were incorporated in the northern lake scene.

Don't forget - Sunday March 4 is the Mosaic Window Workshop at the studio, so if you'd like to create your own piece or learn how to do your own window - check the classes & call to see if there is room!

Spring Break

It's getting about time to change up our indoor vignettes in anticipation of seasonal changes outdoors!

If you don't want to sprout your own, there are some faux plants that can arouse spring fever under glass.

Green grass sprouts,

Bulbs blooming,

....are they real or aren't they......?

Go ahead, lighten up your furnishing colours,

add pastel blooms,

and maybe a welcoming spot for birds to nest.

Its a fresh new space with a brand new colour scheme.

Sunday we had a full class in the studio to learn techniques for creating Wings.

There were different media using wire, transfer film, machine embroidery, angelina film, micro-beads and glitter.

Lots of glue, glitter & giggles ended up enveloping all of us in the room.

The wing techniques learned that day will be sure to be showing up in many one-of-a-kind dolls, angels or creatures. Again the diverse talents & imaginations of all brought out many different interpretations.

Excuse me, but I think you have a little glitter on your nose....

Who knew that sewing machine cords weren't made long enough for stand-up sewing?

Mosaic Vase Workshop

Students came into the workshop with different ideas, diverse colour palettes and lots of enthusiasm, but a little unsure of what was in front of them.

Sunday they sorted through jars of glass and mosaic tiles, looking for the perfect inspiration.

We cut, pieced and adhered the stained glass to clear glass vases, not quite sure of how the finished product would look.

It was with anticipation that we left the vases overnight to cure.

The next night everyone was back, eager to grout.

It can be a dirty job, but my class enjoyed the perfect spot to mix and apply the messy stuff.

Once the grout set for a bit, we polished and cleaned until the rainbow colours appeared through the cloud of dusty haze.

This part is like Christmas morning to me!

And then.....the big reveal!

Found some photos of my studio so we'd have some "before" pics...

Here is the spot many of my faeries were born.

A great work space is all about the tools,

the fabrics,

an inspiration board,

but mostly, its about the STASH!!!

Now we just need to update the decor and then the put it all back together.

I have oodles of design & organization ideas that we will soon be starting, so keep watching!

A Clean Palette

My new working studio is under construction.

Unfortunately before we could do anything, we needed to empty all the "stuff".

(Its amazing what you find...I found all kinds of goodies to be used in some cool creations.)

But, back to the renos.......

This view shows where I had my creative workbench, TV, cubbies & drawers, tool boards & shelves.

In this shot, behind what used to be a fabric bolt shelving wall, was my stash storage room.

For any of you that had been in my work area, you know how much "stuff" has been removed....

Now, for the fun part! It is time to begin putting all the ideas and wishes into reality.

It was a good return to workshops this past Sunday.

There was lots of serious concentration and some good laughs in the studio.

These happy characters ..... ( the Gourds, that is )

will be ready for the next holiday season!

Everyone completed their Gourd-gous Santa in a nice relaxed pace.

This Gourd-gous Santa will be flying off to his new home in Southern Ontario.

We even produced a Garden Gourd Gnome version.....

Besides the workshop, there has been lots going on at Vintage Pixie Studio.

My "old" working studio in my basement has been gutted!

I've been busy in the studio, enjoying the company dropping in to visit and look around, to check out the many new creations and collectibles continuously being added to the shop.

In our new location, people are finding it quick and convenient to drop by on a lunch or coffee break! I'm always happy to see visitors coming up the stairs.

These favourite garbage bins are a special order we just completed for some of my customers who love the uniqueness and practicality they add to a home.

Gourd-gous Santa

Sunday January 29th

Although the Christmas season has passed for another year, many of you requested this workshop. So, get a head start on next years decor. A fun day spent sculpting a lovable Santa on a dried gourd. He is then brought to life with embellishments and paint. All skill levels are welcome. All materials supplied including a light lunch.

Glass Mosaic Vase

Sunday February 5, 11am-5pm

Monday Feb. 6, 6pm-7:30pm

This stylish vase is a great vessel for flowers, candles or fruits. You will learn the basics of creating a mosaic on the Sunday and then on Monday evening the piece will be grouted. In this full day workshop we will explore various mediums to create 4 or more pairs of beautiful fairy or angel wings. These are applicable on all sorts of figures whether you create soft sculpture, polymer sculptures or other crafts. All materials are supplied including a light lunch. Sculpting a Character Doll

This 2 day workshop is designed to give newcomers all the basics required to sculpt a figure or art doll. It is also a great refresher course for intermediate students. Foolproof steps will be taught to sculpt a head, hands and feet to scale, as well as creating a wire armature and build a body in which to attach the sculpted head and limbs. A light lunch is included both days.

By far our most popular workshop. All skill levels welcome. Create a stunning picture to hang in a window and have the light shine through. You choose the design, we show you how to create it. You will be provided a frame allowing for a 10"x10" picture. All materials supplied including a light lunch. Students are required to have wheeled glass nippers (available at the studio for purchase) and safety glasses.

Costuming the Figure

Saturday March 10, Sunday March 11

This is meant to be part two of the beginner sculpting class however taking the 1st class is not a prerequisite. In this 2 day workshop we will cover in depth how to create all sorts of clothing for your figures, as well as how to create the illusion of movement. On day 2 we will learn to create a mohair wig to custom fit your head. Students will need to bring an unclothed figure to dress and wig. A sewing machine and basic sewing kit is also required. We will supply fabrics and mohair and any other supplies needed.

A Full Figured Fae

Saturday March 24, Sunday March 25

10am-4pm

$190 +$50.00 kit fee

In these 2 days you will create your own bodacious fairy with attitude. You will receive my pattern as well as step by step instructions to create a soft sculpted face. Students will require a sewing machine (must know how to operate-we do not teach sewing), have basic sewing skills and basic sewing kit. Materials will be supplied in your kit. A choice of colours will be given. A light lunch will be provided both days

Vintage finds - use them in your decor!

There is something so warm and interesting about using things from the past in the homes of today.

Here are a couple of vignettes that combine vintage technology, wonderful old books, rustic wooden barrels with a fabulous industrial shelving unit.

Be bold! If a piece invokes emotion in you, or memories of simpler times, it can add charm to any style, including contemporary.

Graphics for creative play

Whether you are a scrapbooker, journaler or altered art enthusiast, it is a great idea to keep a file of go-to graphic art to choose from when you are looking for it, or just to start a theme.

Here are a few vintage photos that could inspire some interesting and fun collages. These are some of my favorites. They are from http://graphicsfairy.blogspot.com/. Check them out, they have hundreds of great graphics for your creative endeavors.

As mentioned in my previous post, I have been busy creating Workshop Samples and working on scheduling class dates so the new line-up will be ready to reveal with photos this week!

Wishing you all a wonderful and creative 2012!

My holiday consisted of good food, great company and just the joy of spending some time with my family.
One of my favourite Christmas surprises was an e-reader, so I actually had a reading day!

After some much needed and thoroughly enjoyed "down-time", it is time to get busy in the Studio!
I am up to my elbows in fun stuff, my imagination is revitalized and my winter workshops will be revealed in the coming week, so keep checking back.

Today, I want to share a treat with you all that is simple to prepare and very satisfying to those of us who enjoy a bit of a salty-sweet treat. If these are against any of your resolutions, good luck with that!...besides these are fat-free, or good fat, or high protein, or vegetarian, or something good....

Keep the ingredients in the cupboard (maybe bury the Rolo's in the back or bottom of your freezer....) and in 7 minutes you are serving up these Turtle-like goodies.

Simply unwrap your Rolo's (the ones in the rolls in candy bar section aren't individually wrapped, so one less step!)
Place pretzels in single layer on baking sheet (parchment paper makes for easy clean-up, if you don't have a kitchen pixie)
Top each pretzel with a Rolo, bake at 350deg for 3-5 minutes until chocolate is soft, but not completely melted.
Remove from oven, squish down the Rolo with a nut!

Let cool...be careful if you lift before they are firm because they can be a little top heavy & roll over on the Rolo. You may want to refrigerate to make sure they are firm.

Make your own variations with your favourite ingredients (or whatever you have on hand)

This is the M&M & Hershey Kiss version. Pick the candy and colours for your theme.

Sinterklaas

In the aftermath of the rush of the season, I thought I would take a moment to share a custom piece which I was commissioned to create for a client.

This is Sinterklaas, the Dutch Santa or the original Saint Nicolas who came from Spain to the Netherlands.

As a benefit of my work, I am always learnng new things and research required to gather the information to complete the costume design for unique figures, whether cultural, historic or imaginary.

How fun was this trip?!

we landed at City Center Airport - love flying Porter, so convenient...
we had scored a room at the fabulously trendy Hyatt Regency in the entertainment district - the room was small but efficient (kind of reminded me of a cruise ship room).

after a few drinks, it was a giggling frenzy setting up our sleeping arrangements...

...but the next morning, we were off and running, bright and early.

This Vintage Pixie was on assignment at the Direct Energy Center for the set-up of the 2011 One of a Kind Christmas Show. I was fortunate to be invited by artist friend Kate Church to observe and help set up her display.

next destination, Eaton Center!

and we were out to do some damage at the notorious shopping mecca, (sales at the Bay were definitely up after our visit). The Christmas decor sparkled, with the glittering Swarovski tree and giant twinkling reindeer.

after a quick return to drop our mountain of parcels in the hotel, we hopped on the TTC Subway (the new Rocket, proudly built in Thunder Bay!)

What a convenient way to get to the far north side of the city in a matter of minutes, no traffic jams!

we arrived at the doorstep of the Toronto Center for the Arts for the weird and wonderful performance of THE ADDAMS FAMILY, a magnificently macabre musical comedy, with amazing costume and set design. Inspirations galore!

the next two days were spent at the OOAK show, where we were charmed, impressed and delighted with the talents and creations of the 800 Artisans.

meeting up with a fellow doll artist, Deborah Colston

the crowning glory of our trip (pun intended) was our splurge on tickets to the a concert at the Air Canada Center by the artist Prince...an 80s dream come true - over 3 hours of funky music, with 6 encores, just amazing! we left with no voices (we were the woowoo girls) and our hands literally bruised from applauding.

as the trip wound down to the end, we were forced to get creative in the packing of our many bags, gifts, treasures and new fashions into our luggage.
again, a convenient few blocks to the airport in the morning and we were home in the wink of an eye (maybe a few winks)

Success! a dozen new "Flaky" Snow people!

On Saturday, I returned from the ultimate girl's creative road trip!
(more to follow on that adventure...that requires a separate post)

Thunder Bay offered a snowy inspiration for a cozy, crafty Sunday in the studio. The weather outside was threatening to be "frightful" but the creative pixies inside were delightful!
With sighs, individuality, yummy nibbles & LOTS of giggles, the Flakes - Folky Snowmen were born.

this group of ladies have some cool new additions to their decor or a gift or two checked off their list.....

individual style was the flavour of the day, as jester hats, bonnets, berets, and colours came to life...

....jet lag didn't deter my enthusiasm and wonder at the interpretation of the apprentice pixies!

And the winner is.... Noreen. Congratulations Noreen on winning the handmade Santa in a chimney at the open house this past weekend. The snow fell, the temperature dropped and people aplenty visited our studio for the Christmas open house. Thank you everyone for the wonderful comments and encouragement. It felt like there should be nothing left in the studio by the rate the parcels and bags were leaving, however the vintage pixie and her giggling friends must have been hard at work, for all the nooks and crannies are still jammed packed with all sorts of charming treasures. Well we have much to catch up on. First I need to show you the last class pictures. Once again it was a very creative group. It is always fun to see all the unique designs people do in the mosaic glass. All of them turned out wonderful.

A lot has been happening in the studio. Christmas has arrived and the Christmas hours officially begin this Thursday. The studio will be open Tuesdays to Saturdays 11am-5pm. There are many wonderful new creations for all your decorating and gift giving needs. Here is just a hint...

Finishing Projects

Sometimes it feels as though projects will never get finished. You start with such enthusiasm, and as other jobs disrupt you and day to day life just gets in the way, you become disenchanted with that excitement for the new design or creation. Your mind has moved on to all kinds of new ideas that you want to start but your current project is there to remind you it is waiting to be finished. This happens to me almost on a weekly basis. Sometimes my self discipline kicks in and I finish the started project, and other times said project gets pushed aside to wait until excitement is renewed. I have, however discovered that there are those special times when you force yourself to do something you don't want to, that wonderful things happen. A while back I posted some pics on W.I.P. Wednesday of what I was then calling brownies. Because the holiday season is fast approaching I felt I needed to work on Christmas items so they became elves instead. A wonderful thing happened- I love them.

these little fellows are so cute and versatile. they are small enough to sit in your hand. they have a bean bag style body that allows them to be positioned and can be tucked into any little spot including in a tree. To kick off the fall season, workshops have resumed with the mosaic window class this past weekend. It was great fun with a talented group of ladies. Nothing better than good laughs good people and creativity.

Words can't express the awe and excitement that was "Junk Bonanza". It was overwhelming. If I had the space I would have bought so much more. As it was the vehicle was filled to the roof. Treasure Hunting

I am feeling alot like a child at Christmas as I count the days until Junk Bonanza. I am off to hunt for treasures for the shop or to make there way into fall and winter designs. I embrace my inner flea market geekiness so much so that my fellow treasure hunter, Carla and I embellished special carts to use on our expedition.

We hope to return with tons of treasures and inspiration. The studio will have to be closed this weekend while I do my buying. We will reopen on September 22nd with our fall and Halloween lines available for the first time.

saying goodbye to spring and summer

Although we may have more warm days ahead, Labour Day weekend signifies the end of summer for many of us. Whether you have kids getting ready to go back to school, cottages to close up for winter or yards to rake and summer furniture to pack away for another year, the weather today seems like fall has arrived. I enjoy every season, however as I perused some photos taken of my garden this spring and summer, I can't help but feel a bit sad to see the garden season approaching it's end for another year...

With a new season approaching, new challenges also arrive. For the first time I am able to design creations for fall and Halloween. In the past, I would have been closing my store and reorganizing for Christmas. I have been remiss in posting my W.I.P. Wednesdays, partly because I did not want to show the fall designs too soon. I figured in keeping with the mood of the weekend I could give you a sneak peek of one of the new designs.

One last note for today. I was not looking at a Canadian calender when I set the dates for the fall workshops. Without realizing it I had scheduled one of the classes for the thanksgiving weekend. Thankfully this was brought to my attention by someone who wanted to take the workshop, (Thanx Diane and Carla) so I have changed the date as follows;

There is nothing more stunning than sunlight streaming through stain glass. In this workshop you will learn to create and mosaic a basic design to hang in a window. We supply your frame, glass and adhesive. Students are required to bring glass nippers and safety glasses. ( we do sell wheeled glass nippers at the studio) Sunday will be spent designing and mosaicing your piece. A light lunch will be provided on the Sunday. You will return Tuesday evening to grout and polish your design.

Fibre Canvas Art

Sunday, October 2, 10am-4pm $68.00

In this workshop you will be working with fibres to create a gourgeous work of art. You will learn basic felting, simple free motion embroidery and beadwork. This is for all skill levels. We provide all supplies and a light lunch. Students are required to bring felting needles (available for sale at the studio) and a sewing machine that is able to drop feed dog. Please know how to operate your sewing machine-we don't teach sewing.

Sculpting a Faerie (part one)

Saturday October 22, and Sunday October 23, 10am-4pm $225.00

In this 2 day workshop you will learn step by step techniques to sculpt a pretty faerie in polymer clay.

We will sculpt the head, hands and feet. and apply them to a wire armiture. Polymer clay will be provided. Students are required to have a basic tool kit for sculpting. (kit is available for purchase)

A light lunch will be provided both days. This workshop is for all skill levels. It will be followed in November by part 2 which will cover painting, costuming and wings.

Where do the days go. It is already the 21st of August. I have been busy preparing workshops for the fall, creating Halloween and fall designs for the shop and holding workshops. This week a great group of ladies got together for the 1st part of the mosaic toadstool workshop. they will be grouted on Tuesday. I will post pics of the finished toadstools.

I have been a bad blogger. Sorry friends, but life sometimes gets in the way. I have been working regardless of my absence here, so let's catch up. I finished all the petites fleurs including a tiny mermaid child. I am happy with the finished product, what do you think?

I have also begun a new line of house brownies which will be under the $100.00 price point. I think they will be quite fun.
here they are at the beginning stage.

I have also been very busy working on new designs for Halloween which won't be revealed just yet. As well, some great workshops for fall which will be posted soon.

The last bit of news is something for everyone. For the month of August all garden items and home decor will be 25% off. With the studio much smaller than the old shop I need to make room for fall and then Christmas so what better way, then to have a sale. You won't want to miss this.

Extreme Workshops

well the temperature was in the 30's with the humidity high, but the class must go on. Lucky for us the garage/workshop was somewhat cooler than outside so the heat did not zap the creativity in the air. The birdhouse workshop was great fun-everyone was very pleased with their results. As you can see they deserve to be birdhouse proud...

Now, I must confess my transgressions. Due to the crazy wonderful weather we have had recently I have fallen a bit behind in my W.I.P projects. I have finished my mosaic window and I am very pleased.

My Petites Fleurs, however are a bit behind. LOL I have finished sculpting all of them and have painted them -but the costuming is not quite finished yet-here they are so far...

Hopefully I will be a bit more disciplined this week-it all depends on mother nature!

A Wonderful Afternoon

Although the weather was wet and miserable today, it was the perfect day for a workshop indoors. The sleeping garden troll class was a huge success. Everyone went home with an adorable little creature. Lots of laughs and a creative afternoon was spent with a great group of people.

OK, so I know I haven't updated you on the Petites Fleur's I have been working on. There is a good reason, sort of. I am making 20 of them. Sounds crazy I know, but |I thought I should get a head start on inventory for next year, if I am going to do the One of a Kind Show. That is the goal. As of now I have 16 of these little creatures unpainted and undressed so really not much to show just yet. That being said, I am a bit creatively A.D.D. so I started another project in the middle of these little faeries.
I had this wonderful shabby white frame that was an odd size, so I added some glass and have begun a floral mosaic. Here is where I am at so far...

My goal is to finish this mosaic and be finished, or close to finished all 20 of the Petites Fleur's, by next Wednesday. Grand illusions? maybe but one must have goals.

I have a few things to share with you tonight. I have begun working on some petite fleurs. Some of you may recall the ones I have made in the past. I love making them and will continue to do so as long as they remain popular. I have to say as I photographed them today I thought they look awfully alien like at this stage. Colour and eyes will make a world of difference.

Tonight was the first workshop of the season and it was a huge success. We all had a blast and the end results were fantastic.

W.I.P. Wednesday

So I have decided to make Wednesdays the day I post my Work in Progress. I am hoping this will assist me with 2 things. A regularity to my posting, as well as the discipline to finish things. LOL. This is a grand goal indeed. For all you creative types out there, you know it is a chronic symptom to have numerous projects unfinished, on and around the work table. Well at the very least I will have to finish what I post, as I will feel accountable to you.

Today I went through my stash of vintage stuff and pulled out some funky silver salt and pepper shakers. I decided to up-cycle them into some quirky characters. Here is where I am at, so far. These are just sculpted and cured. They still need to be painted and accessorized-this will bring them to life.

I will post pics once they are finished - probably tomorrow. Until then...

Fabric / Lace collage -Ladies Night

Wednesday June 22, 5pm-9pm $48.00

Join us right after work for a light super (provided) and we will begin creating at 6pm.

These charming multi-media collages are great for the wall, can be made into a pillow or even a bag. Once you have completed one you will be addicted. Materials are supplied. Students can bring personal embellishments to add if they wish. You are required to bring a sewing machine and basic sewing kit. If you would like to email me a personal photo and/or quote, I can prepare it for transfer to personalize your collage. Only basic sewing skills needed

"Spring into Fashion" earings and necklace set

Ladies Night Wednesday June 29, 5pm-9pm $60.00

Join us right after work for a light super (provided) and we will begin creating at 6pm.

In this workshop you will be working with sterling silver wire and freshwater pearls. You will learn some basic jewelry techniques, including how to make your own ear wires. All materials supplied. Create one of these adorable little garden trolls in polymer clay. All materials supplied. A light lunch is included. Students require a stylus or metal knitting needle to sculpt with-any other tools needed will be on hand. No experience required.

Cobblestone Faerie Cottage for the garden

Sunday July 17, 10am-4pm

small $95.00 or large $125.00

These quaint cottages are a great accent in the garden or the home. You have the choice between the tall/large house or the short house. Roof colour can vary as well. All materials are supplied, including a light lunch. We suggest wearing grubbies as these can get messy. All skill levels

Mosaic Toadstool

Sunday July 10, 11am-4pm, Wednesday July 13, 6pm-8pm $95.00

Decorative toadstools are a great addition to the garden and provide a place for the pixies to sleep. All materials supplied. Students are required to bring glass nippers to cut their glass and safety glasses. (We do sell wheeled nippers at the studio). Saturday will be spent cutting and applying glass pieces to toadstool and then on Wednesday they will be grouted and polished. All skill levels welcome.

Garden Proud

Ok, so I am a bit behind in my workshop samples and scheduling. We had a few nice days, finally and I had to spend them gardening. This time of year creative discipline is very challenging. I have done some work but not as much as I would have liked. Then I look out the window at my garden and think, it was oh so worth it. Yes I am Garden Proud. I promise to get back to the workshop but in the meantime here is why I am garden proud...

Cool Junk Huntin'

My idea of a fantastic weekend, great friends, alot of laughs, great shopping and of course, lots of vintage treasures. I am talking of course about the Christie Antique Sale in Dundas, Ontario. Here is just a hint of all the wonderful treasures I wasn't able to bring home-I needed a transport to haul everything I wanted. As it was, I brought 3 full suitcases home.

I also had a custom order finished and picked up by the customer today. I think it was a success and it was alot of fun to do. This Foo Foo Fairy was made as a gift for a local dance instructor. I hope she loves it...

Mothers Day

Happy Mothers Day to all the Moms out there. I truly believe it is the toughest job in the world. Today I spend the day with my Mom making arrangements for her Mothers funeral. My grandmother passed away yesterday and she is the last of my grandparents. We have been sharing stories and memories, and one thing that comes up in every story is that my Grandmother was always feisty, sometimes to a comical fault, however she was the most loyal and protective mama bear to those she loved.

A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden, fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts. ~Washington Irving

Studio Update

Well, opening day is getting closer and the workshop is in shambles as numerous projects are coming to completion. I just had to show some more snippets of the studio as I decorate. Aren't these pillows yummy? I just love the natural linens and burlaps in conjunction with vintage french graphics. They are tres chic.

I have been collecting vintage treasures for almost a year now in anticipation of the new studio. It is just like Christmas as I unpack boxes of goodies and find just the right spot to place them.

Ridiculous, I know, but I will be sad to part with many of these treasures. However every piece will eventually find a good home and will make room for all the new goodies I am constantly on the hunt for.

I hope you love the mix of industrial, shabby, french and rustic, as much as I do.

I have just returned from Ottawa where I had been invited by the wonderful doll club All Dolled Up http://adu2010.blogspot.com/ to teach a sculpting class. It was a fantastic weekend where I saw old friends and met new ones. It is always exciting to be surrounded by individuals who are eager to embrace their creativity and step outside the box and try new things. Fun was had by all. This group certainly knows how to treat visting teachers. I certainly felt like a VIP. During my visit I was fortunate to be put up at a fellow doll makers home. Edwina Sutherland could not have been a more gracious host. She took me on a wonderful tour of the city, which ended with the highlight- a visit to her studio. It is always inspiring to see another artist's space and their work. She is a wonderfull soft sculpture and felting artist as well as a historical costumer for museums and theatre. check out her website
